With more than 40 years of experience as an investment banker, a consultant and executive recruiter, and an active board member in the non-profit world, John has developed deep insight into the intersection of philanthropy and finance. He currently serves as a Senior Advisor to Impact Investment Leaders, L3C, an investor network and social enterprise incubator in Park City, Utah. He is also the founder and President of J.W. Townsend & Company, a New York-based financial institution consulting firm.
Previously, John was Head of Investment Banking and Global Derivatives at UBS in New York, which followed an 8 year stint as a Vice President at Goldman Sachs in International Corporate Finance.
Among his several non-profit board affiliations, he serves as a trustee and Head of the Finance Committee of the Altman Foundation in New York, which recently celebrated its hundredth birthday and is a leader in New York in Program Related Investments.
John is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and holds an MBA from Penn's Wharton School. He is also a graduate of the Defense Language Institute in Monterey and served in Army Intelligence in Munich during the Vietnam-War era.
